One of Mr. Sasster's coworkers, Vanessa Vaughn-West, is participating in this year's Shave to Save event. Shave to Save is an event where men and women volunteer to shave their heads in honor or memory of someone that has been touched by cancer. Established in 2001, Shave to Save has raised over $750,000 for American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge of Kansas City. Hope Lodge understands that undergoing treatment for cancer can be both financially and emotionally overwhelming. In an effort to ease the burden of cancer, the American Cancer Society provides free housing to cancer patients traveling to Kansas City for treatment.
Vanessa's fundraising page says, "I'm excited and hopeful. I'm nervous. I'm scared. But, isn't that mix of emotions what cancer patients deal with all the time?"

It takes a lot of courage to do what Vanessa's doing. We're really amazed by her commitment and downright SASS for this cause, and we hope you will be too. If you're interested in helping her reach her goal, you may visit her page to make a donation. She's almost halfway to her goal of raising $2,500 and we're confident she'll make it.

From One Aunt to Another:
Here I am, better late than never! (Or at least that's what I tell my 6th hour kids who arrive late after lunch Every. Single. Day.) I was really interested to read about a typical day in your treatment life. I had no idea how long a process it was, nor how much sitting and waiting was involved. I'm not sure what to say about it, other than I see now a little bit of what you're dealing with. And what's up with all the waiting rooms that don't have magazines? Seriously. Anyway, I have a couple of book recommendations for you, which I tend to hand out whether they're needed or not, so here you are: The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff is about Mormonism and polygamy! And we all know you can't turn down an opportunity to read about polygamy. Who can, really? The other is a lighter read: I Was Told There'd Be Cake by Sloane Crosley. It's a collection of Sedaris-esque essays that are funny because you've done the same silly stuff the author has. So, enjoy, when you have a little reading time. And now I'd better get out in the living room to help my mom with Mason...We have to watch her or she really hogs the baby. Thinking of you and sending love.
Oh, and you have my permission to be on Facebook. Just not my mom. :)
Hey Taryn,
You ARE alive and well! Thanks for checking in! Ivan has been reading a lot about the Mormons, actually, so we'll check into that book. I've already read I Was Told There'd Be Cake and did enjoy it a lot. I've just finished The Help by Kathryn Stockett, a wonderful description of African American domestic workers' lives in the 60's. I'm almost finished with Three Cups of Tea. (I know, I'm the last one in America to read it, but it was worth the wait. My copy is signed by the author, which I think earns points.) It's an inspiring true account of Greg Mortenson's work building schools for girls in Pakistan. I recommend both books.
Unfortunately, I think the Facebook Permission rules are very specific that mothers are only allowed to participate via permission from their own offspring. Technically, Connie would need Taryn AND Tyler's permission and I would need Kylia AND Nicolai's and it's such a slippery slope. Would I find myself twittering and internet dating next? I don't think I'm up for it. :)
Love,
Aunt #2
In case someone's following the blog that doesn't have time to settle in with the books our Story Sasster mentioned, I'd recommend the link to Vanessa's page found in the original post. It's a quick, but meaningful read. I'm anxiously awaiting her jump over 50% - she's so close!
I noticed a member of the Sassterhood already contributed to her cause...hopefully others will too!
I looked at Shave to Save and it looks like the Sassterhood is stepping up to the plate!
Jan, It was super great to see you last night. The name of the other book I mentioned was The Vagrants by Yiyun Li. Did you leave a copy of The Help at Grandpa's, or did I mishear you? It sounds similar to a book I read in Multicultural Lit in college. Hope you had an uneventful trip back to KC!
Have a wonderful time in Hawaii--you deserve it!
Wow! Thanks so much for your support, Sassters! It's awesome to be a part of your network of dynamos who are caring for each other and using your positive energy and resources to bring awareness about cancer, Hope Lodge, and progress towards a cure. You guys are super! -V.
P.S. Only $700 to go to reach the goal!
Keep going, Vanessa!!!!
Hats off to Vanessa for her commitment and love, I'm impressed!
Thanks so much for lending me The Help. It was great! I just finished it this evening. It brought up a lot of questions and really made me think.
How was the trip to Hawaii?
